General System Information:
What Tech You Need to Have
To be successful at Goldfarb, you need your own reliable tech.
Your Laptop: Your Main Learning Tool
- Requirement: YES, you absolutely must have your own personal laptop.
- Why? You'll use it constantly for:
- Getting course materials
- Writing papers and doing assignments
- Taking online quizzes and exams (some require special software)
- Using Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel - free for you!)
- Accessing Canvas and other online learning sites.
- What Won't Work (And Why):
- Tablets (like iPads), Chromebooks, Netbooks: Sorry, these aren't powerful enough or compatible with some required software, especially for exams.
- Work Laptops (from BJC, WashU, or anywhere else): Laptops managed by other companies often have security settings or software restrictions that block access to Goldfarb tools or cause problems. Plus, our IT team can't help you fix issues on them. Use your own personal laptop.
- Minimum Laptop Specs (What to Look For):
(Think of these as the bare minimum. Getting something better might make things run smoother. Check the GSON IT support page for the very latest recommendations before buying!)
- Processor: Intel Core i5 (7th Gen or newer) or similar AMD chip.
- Memory (RAM): 16 GB (This is important for running multiple programs).
- Storage: 256 GB Solid State Drive (SSD) (SSDs are much faster!).
- Operating System: An up-to-date, fully patched version of Windows (like Windows 11) or macOS (latest supported version). Keep those security updates installed!
- Software:
- Good Antivirus (Windows Defender is okay, but keep it updated).
- Modern Web Browser (Google Chrome is recommended).
- PDF Reader (like Adobe Reader).
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi ready.
- Screen Size: 14 inches or bigger recommended.
- Battery Life: At least 4 hours (for classes or studying away from an outlet).
- Webcam & Microphone: Required! You'll need these for online classes, meetings, and some online exams. Most laptops have them built in.
- Laptop Problems? It's your responsibility to keep your personal laptop working. The Goldfarb/BJC IT teams do not repair or fix students' personal computers. Find a local repair shop or use your manufacturer's warranty if needed.
Your Smartphone (iOS or Android)
- Requirement: YES, you must have a smartphone.
- Why?
- Security: You'll use it for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) with the Microsoft Authenticator app. This is like a double-check to prove it's really you logging in, keeping your account secure.
- Convenience: Easy access to your GSON email, Canvas, etc., on the go.
Reliable Internet Access
- Requirement: You need reliable, high-speed internet both on and off campus.
- On Campus: We provide Wi-Fi.
- Off Campus: It's your responsibility to secure internet access at home or wherever you study. Make sure it's fast enough for online classes, video meetings, and exams.
