Clinical Courses
A student enrolled in a clinical course may receive an immediate course failure up to dismissal, which will appear on the student’s transcript, for:
- Violations of personal integrity, academic standards, or any egregious safety errors;
- Absence from clinical/practicum without approval;
A clinical failure at the end of a 7 week rotation in a 14 week course constitutes a failure and will be recorded as a course failure, which will appear on the transcript. The student may not withdraw from the course. At mid-point of clinical, faculty will meet with student to review progress. If student is at risk remediation will be assigned. Remediation will include a study plan that addresses areas for improvement and a schedule to practice skills in the lab setting.
Clinical Absence & Make-up Policy:
Students are required to attend all scheduled clinical, simulation, and lab experiences. Clinical absences will be documented, and the student will be held accountable to make up the clinical hours missed to meet the required clinic course hours and learning objectives. Clinical absences will be documented on the student’s clinical evaluation.
Clinical absences resulting in unsatisfactory performance.
Personal reasons such as vacations, work schedules, and personal appointments are not viewed as extenuating circumstances. A student who is absent for more than one unexcused clinical experience will be in jeopardy of not passing the course and therefore, not progressing to the next level. Students who miss more than one clinical experience will be required to meet the course faculty to determine if it is possible for the student to successfully complete the course.
Clinical Make-Up
The specific nature of the clinical makeup is at the discretion of the course lead. Clinical makeups are made up on a 1:1 hour basis either by direct patient care, simulation or skills lab, or a combination of both. Arrangements for making up clinical hours are based on availability of the clinical site, faculty, specific learner needs, and may take place outside of the normal scheduled clinical day, time, and unit.
Students are required to make up the missed clinical hours within a designated time period as assigned by the course lead. If the clinical hours are not made up within the prescribed timeframe, an Incomplete will be assigned until completed.
In addition, clinical make ups may be scheduled at the end of the term.
