GOLDFARB SCHOOL OF NURSING AT BARNES-JEWISH COLLEGE SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY

The purpose of this policy (https://www.barnesjewishcollege.edu/Social-Media-Policy) is to provide guidelines to students regarding their use of social media. Social media are internet-based platforms that are highly accessible to others where individuals can generate content and engage in social interactions. Social media platforms are constantly evolving and include, but are not limited to, Twitter, Facebook, blogs, TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc.

Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College recognizes that social media has become important communication tools for our community. The following policy serves as a guideline for those seeking to establish a social media outlet involving any group, organization or individual representing the College.

It is important to note that social media may be used to investigate student or employee behavior. Employees and students are also required to comply with BJC’S Policy #7-10 “Internet/Intranet Activity and Security” which can be found online via HR Direct.

SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT GUIDELINES

Goldfarb supports the use of social media in personal/non-school or non-work contexts. As a student or employee at Goldfarb, you may encounter confidential information within the College or within the patient care environment during clinical practicum. Consistent with the BJC Confidentiality Statement that you signed at the beginning of your program/employment, it is your responsibility to refrain from any of the following:

  1. Using Goldfarb’s identity, such as name, color, and emblems unless prior approval or written permission is received. Additionally, do not create or develop social media accounts, profiles or initiatives bearing Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College’s name without prior approval from Goldfarb Communications and Marketing.
  2. Disclosing confidential information. It is important that you maintain the confidentiality of proprietary or protected information. Do not disclose, post or share proprietary Goldfarb information, data or communications. This includes, but is not limited to, student records, donor information, home addresses and social security numbers, intellectual property, operating plans, vendor communications, financial data, internal presentations and correspondence. If you are unsure whether information is confidential or not, please contact Goldfarb Communications and Marketing.
  3. Using of patients’ name (any identifier including initials, hospital name, etc.) personal health information in any way. Examples of such information include, but are not limited to, protected health information (PHI).
  4. Cyberbullying and cyberstalking will not be tolerated at Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College. Any conduct that would be inappropriate, unprofessional or unethical at the College if social media was not involved can also result in disciplinary action when social media is being utilized. For example, threatening or sexually harassing another student when using social media can subject you to College discipline just as if you engaged in such conduct in person.
  5. Stating personal opinions as being endorsed by the College. If you identify yourself as a Goldfarb student or employee online, it should be clear that any views you express are not necessarily those of the institution. If opposing views arise on a social media feed, exercise professional judgment. Goldfarb does not tolerate content from students or employees that is defamatory, harassing, libelous or inhospitable to a reasonable academic/work environment. For example, when engaging on social media, your opinions can only be expressed in your individual capacity on your own social media accounts and, even then, avoid the appearance that you are speaking or acting for the College.
  6. Using information and conducting activities that may violate Goldfarb academic policies, or may violate local, state, or federal laws, and regulations. Use good judgment. Your actions and statements have the ability not only to affect yourself, but also others at Goldfarb and the College as a whole. Please be mindful that posts on social media may be replicated quickly, be taken out of context, and will remain public for an indeterminate amount of time.
  7. Endorsing commercial partners. Use of Goldfarb’s name, marks, or research examples for corporate promotion. This includes a prohibition on ad placement for commercial partners, partner content marketing or “advertorials,” announcement of commercial partnerships by Goldfarb, and participation in published case studies about Goldfarb’s relationship with commercial partners.
  8. Creating or developing social media accounts, profiles or campaigns that focus on novel Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and/or the disease COVID-19 on Goldfarb’s behalf without specific, written approval by Goldfarb Communications and Marketing. In evaluating any request of this type, Goldfarb Communications and Marketing will consult with the College’s president, dean and other administration. This subject-matter-specific policy will remain in effect until further notice.

Any student who violates this policy will be subject to the full range of corrective action, up to and including dismissal.
