Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Nurse Educator Concentration

Barnes-Jewish College Goldfarb School of Nursing offers an online Master of Science in Nursing Nurse Educator concentration for BSN-prepared registered nurses interested in becoming professional nurse educators with competencies in patient education, staff development, and academic practice education.

The Nurse Educator concentration prepares students to assume the complex professional educator role in a variety of settings by integrating prior learning with advanced graduate level course work and clinical experiences.

The Nurse Educator concentration emphasizes the role of clinical practice nursing education, including the importance of learning in academic practice settings. Students will learn the history and development of curriculum, self and learners in a variety of practice settings. Students will also learn to develop teaching plans to deliver and evaluate content to learners in the practice setting.

Graduates of the Nurse Educator Concentration will be prepared to prepare and deliver content to patients, communities, and other learners. Students will gain experiential learning in acute and community settings as well as academic practice settings.

Students learn the basics of adult learning theory, curriculum design, teaching strategies, assessment of learning, and nursing and higher education regulation to   build and refine curricula. They also learn to identify and create content to apply to simulated learning environments. Students have the opportunity to participate in one-one practicum experiences teaching courses, clinical experiences and/or developing and implementing evidence-based curricula in the clinical setting.


Graduates will be prepared to take the National League for Nursing (NLN) Certified Nurse Educator Novice (CNE®) exam, the Academic Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE-Cl®) exam, or the Certified Nurse Educator (CNE®) exam upon completion of requisite experience.

Admission Requirements

  • BSN from a regionally accredited institution of higher education

  • Transcripts from all post-secondary schools attended.

  • Cumulative GPA from undergraduate work 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale

  • Unencumbered/unrestricted RN License to practice in Missouri. 

  • Two Professional references from individuals who can address academic skills, including oral and written communication skills and clinical competence.

  • Current CV or Resume

  • A personal statement of personal attributes and experiences that will help you be successful in this program.

 

The Admissions Department may provide a 10-year forgiveness for cumulative GPA calculationThe student should submit a petition for forgiveness of prior grades to the Admissions Department.
